Going out for drinks with friends is the best. Friendship, alcohol, maybe some good food. It’s the best, Jerry! The best! After a little while, though, the adult ADHD that many of us suffer from kicks in and we get antsy. (Squirrel!) We need some friendly competition or something to stimulate our other senses. There are some great places in Scottsdale and the surrounding area where you can drink with friends and challenge them to a duel. Ok, there aren’t any places where you can actually duel. Sorry to get your swashbuckling hopes up. But you can find places for fun things like golf, racing, and ping-pong all while enjoying some drinks and good food. Here are some of the best places for activities in Scottsdale
Since opening during the summer of 2014, Topgolf Scottsdale at Riverwalk next to Talking Stick Casino has welcomed over one million guests. They offer over 100 climate-controlled bays on three floors and different skill games so everyone can compete and have fun. The seating is comfortable enough if you don’t participate, you’ll still enjoy the environment and your friends. There’s an outdoor bar on the third floor plus the main bar on the main (2nd floor) level, and servers are there to make sure your needs are met. While you’re waiting for a bay or if you need a tiebreaker after your games, Topgolf has pool tables, Xbox Kinect, and a shuffleboard table. They also have DJs on the weekends to keep the energy high all night. To give guests even more to enjoy, Topgolf is opening a new first-floor outdoor patio just in time for the perfect Arizona spring weather.
One of the reasons for Topgolf’s rise in popularity is their food and drinks. The menu is constantly evolving, and much of their food is made from scratch daily. The most recent update to the menu includes mini Italian meatball hoagies (yes!), southern shrimp and grits (YES!) and… grilled Angus burger DONUT sliders. They were outstanding, and there were actual negotiations for who got to enjoy the third slider. For drinks, Topgolf offers a solid selection of craft beers, multiple wines and they have a signature drink list with all different styles.

Just across the 101 from Topgolf, down Talking Stick Way, sits ⅓ mile of high-adrenaline racing competition. These aren’t your county fair’s dingy old go-karts – these are finely-tuned European racing karts that hit 45 mph! When the TGG (Three Generic Guys) visited Octane Raceway, they raced, but they were all about the great new menu and signature cocktails at The Brickyard Grill. As much as I love good food (hello, Brickyard Burger!) and cocktails, I am a 12-year-old at heart and Octane Raceway fills all my competitive needs. They also fill my love of saving money with Happy Hour 4-7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
In addition to the racing experience, Octane has mini-bowling, which is way more challenging than it should be. There is an arcade with all the latest games as well as skill games to win tickets for prizes. Octane Raceway also has a beautiful patio that is ideal for relaxing with a beer and a game of bag toss after your race. You could spend the whole day at Octane and not even realize it.

Max Sports Grille
For our last choice, we travel to Max Sports Grille on 7134 E Thomas Road just west of Scottsdale Road. Max Sports Grille has wall-to-wall TVs including small TVs in some of the booths. They have a full menu and daily food and drink specials with Happy Hour from 3 to 7 p.m.
What gets them on this list, though, is the ultimate mix of indoor bar games. Max has two pool tables, shuffleboard, Golden Tee AND table tennis. Although – full disclosure – I have a Golden Tee addiction that is currently dormant, it is the table tennis that sucked me in. A lot of sports bars in Scottsdale have good Golden Tee machines, and some bars have shuffleboard, but I don’t know any bars in the area that have enough room for ALL of these attractions. Plus, they have karaoke, trivia, and poker – not just something for everyone, everything for everyone.
Whether you live in Scottsdale or are just visiting, there’s always something to do. If you choose one of these spots, you can do it with a tasty beverage in your hand. And we all know that makes anything you do a little bit better.
