Unique Spots for Out of Town Relatives

The holidays are approaching, and if you’re the host this season, the kitchen will be a place of chaos. While the family is in town, take a night off from playing chef and enjoy a meal that you didn’t have to prepare at one of the many unique restaurants our city has to offer. Instead of dragging them to the old, humdrum chain joints, give them an experience they wouldn’t normally get in their hometowns. It’s all about showing off how much of a “foodie” you really are. Do you have what it takes?

Razz’s Restaurant and Bar

Hidden in a complex in Scottsdale, Chef Erasmo “Razz” Kamnitzer will give you an exclusive dining experience like you’ve never had before. I recommend snagging a seat at the chef’s table if you want to be a part of the magic. Razz offers a terrific tasting menu of contemporary international cuisine, in which you present to him the things you can’t eat and won’t eat, and from there, he creates whatever he pleases. You’re not allowed to ask what’s next, you must order another round to find out! The limit of courses goes up to 134, but 22 has been the number to beat, all for only $10 per course, per person! “I’ve been to fancy restaurants all over major cities like New York and Chicago; Razz has them all beat” coming from his loyal regulars of 22 years. Make sure you save room for dessert, he has quite the extensive list, all made in-house. Enjoy the Pistachio Passionfruit cake; Razz does for breakfast every morning.

Du Jour Dining

Support the kids! Du Jour Dining serves as a classroom for culinary students of the Arizona Culinary Institute while offering the services of a fine dining restaurant. It’s the perfect spot if you want the feel of a 5-star meal at a 3-star price. Locals rave over the way the student’s present the desserts. The server will wheel out a cart to your table, showing off four of their dessert items. Be sure not to bring in your impatient Uncle Ernie if you want to truly appreciate the setting since the staff is full of students who are continually learning every day. Come in with an open mind, and you will have an even more joyous experience!

Salt Cellar Restaurant

The next stop on our list is actually located 10 ft lower than most restaurants you might be used to. This antique joint has been serving the best seafood in the valley for over 46 years, underground! With the only light source coming from the skylight, the intimate ambiance makes for a cozy evening. The Salt Cellar’s fresh fish and seafood selections will take you right out of the desert and into a freshwater oasis.

Arcadia Farms Café

You’ve heard of farm to table but never done like this. You and your family will indulge in classic menu items but here’s the kicker. Each dish is made with the freshest ingredients to offer. Bask in the warm sun on Acardia Farm’s beautiful patio or bring the party inside. Either way, you will be getting the most organic experience possible. Next door to the Café is Arcadia Farms Marketplace; a gourmet market stocked with fresh-baked pastries and elegant desserts, sandwiches, salads, and entrees ready-to-go to bring back to the house to enjoy.

Hula’s Modern Tiki

For a more casual evening, transport the family to an island inspired modern tiki bar. From the tiki torches to the tiki totems, its a spot anyone will love. The intricacy of their cocktail list inspires any to venture and try a new unique drink, not to mention group cocktails such as the popular scorpion and volcano bowls. As if the bar wasn’t enough, the menu serves up a mouth-watering appetite with hula burgers, ahi tuna tacos, and tiki bowls. If the food is just for nosh try the fantastic happy hour menu, with some spicy edamame or some pork tacos. All the while your conversations will be alit by the candles and the colorful drinks. Whatever your experience would entail, it’s enough to post and share with your friends.
